John le Carre was the pen name of David Cornwall (born 1931). Cornwall had a chequered family background, his father having been jailed for fraud. Cornwall was educated at Sherborne School, and at Lincoln College, Oxford University. Between school and university he carried out his national service in the Intelligence Corps. While at university he worked covertly for MI5. He graduated with a first class degree in Modern Languages, specialising in German Literature. After a spell in teaching, he embarked on an extremely successful career as a writer of spy fiction.

The Financial Times wrote of Sisman’s biography: ’A fascinating, revelatory appendix ... Sisman's latest book exposes the great spy writer's duplicitous and deceitful relationships with the women in his life, providing new insights into the inner workings of the man who created George Smiley.’ The Washington Post wrote: ‘Complex and consequential ... casts le Carré's life and writing in a fresh light ... a fascinating examination of the biographer's art’.
