ALEXANDRA POPOFF
vasily grossman and the soviet century (2019)
Vasily Grossman (born 1905) was a distinguished Russian journalist and writer who worked throughout the Second World War as a war correspondent for the Red Army newspaper. He wrote vivid accounts of the battles of Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, and Berlin. His report on Treblinka was one of the first exposures of Nazi death camps. Brought up by his Jewish family in Ukraine, Grossman trained as a chemical engineer at Moscow State University, changing in the 1930s to a full time career as a writer of novels and short stories.
The Financial Times wrote of Popoff’s biography of Vasily Grossman: “Alexandra Popoff's biography is crisp and comprehensive, deftly interweaving Grossman's personal life with the momentous events he experienced”. The Wall Street Journal wrote: “[Popoff] tells Grossman’s story with sensitivity and a keen understanding of his world, drawing on little-known archival collections to produce what must be considered the definitive biography.”
