Susan Sontag (born 1933) was one of the most prominent American writers of her generation. In 1964 she published her first essay ‘Notes on ‘Camp’’, and went on to a prolific career writing literary criticism, fiction and non-fiction in the form of both books and essays. Her subjects included human rights, war, illness, AIDS, photography, culture and the media. Her work involved travel to conflict zones, including the Vietnam War and the Siege of Sarajevo.

Jonathan Moser’s biography of Sontag is based on numerous interviews, and on access to her restricted archives. It contains nearly a hundred images, many of which have not been published before. The New Statesman wrote: 'There can be no doubting the brilliance - the sheer explanatory vigour - of Moser's biography... a triumph of the virtues of seriousness and truth-telling that Susan Sontag espoused'
