DAN JONES
HENRY V:the ASTONISHING RISE OF ENGLAND’S GREATEST WARRIOR KING (2024)
Henry V (born 1386) lived for only 36 years, but had an extraordinarily eventful and successful career. The eldest son of Henry IV, he became heir when his father seized the throne in 1399. He fought as a teenager against the Welsh revolt under Owain Glydwr and against the Percy family in Northumberland.
He played a key role in the 1403 battle against Harry ‘Hotspur’ Percy of Northumberland, at the age of only 16. On the death of his father in 1413 he assumed the throne of a united English state, and revived the English claim to the throne of France.
In 1415 he renewed the Hundred Years War with France, achieved a famous victory at Agincourt in the sme year. He went on to conquer Paris and most of northern France. He died through an unclear combination of illnesses, near Paris, in 1422
The Telegraph wrote of the book: ‘Jones's prose hums with energy throughout, and his ability to marry realm-scale intrigue with family drama marks this out as narrative history at its best.’ The Observer wrote: ‘Splendidly readable... full of diverting incident and considered judgment... Jones is one of our liveliest historians’.
