EDWARD O’KEEFE
the LOVES OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT (2024)
Theodore Roosevelt (born 1858) was the 26th President of the USA, serving from 1901 to 1909. He assumed the presidency when he was Vice President and President William McKinley was assassinated. Assuming the presidency at the age of 42, he was the youngest person have held that office. Prior to becoming Vice President he had for two years been Governor of New York. A successful soldier, a passionate naturalist, and a reforming politician, Roosevelt was an extremely popular and influential President. His achievements were despite a sickly childhood, and the devastating death of his mother and his young wife on the same day when he was 26. His wife Alice had given birth to their daughter just two days before.
Edward O’Keefe describes how Roosevelt’s life and politics were shaped by five remarkable women - his mother, his two sisters, and his two wives Alice and Edith. The Wall Street Journal wrote of the book: "Entertaining.... [O'Keefe] celebrates [these extraordinary women's] devotion, skills and accomplishments. In doing so, he leads us to a better understanding of an equally extraordinary man." The New York Times wrote: "With meticulous research... [and] perceptive insights... O'Keefe has performed a most valuable service by reminding us how much Theodore Roosevelt, the most virile of presidents, owed to the brilliant women in his life."
