Hadley Freeman has pieced together an enthralling account of her Jewish family’s horrendously turbulent life during the 20th century - marked by invasion, emigration, and the horrors of Auschwitz. When her grandmother Sala died in the USA, Hadley Freeman visited her apartment and found a shoe box containing precious objects collected during her life. Freeman used these to piece together the extraordinary story of her own life and those of her three brothers. The Telegraph reviewer wrote: ‘A near-perfect study of Jewish identity in the 20th century … I don’t hesitate to call it a masterpiece’.
