Hisham Matar’s father was kidnapped in Cairo and taken to Libya when Hisham was just nineteen. Hisham never saw his father again. in this memoir Hisham Matar weaves the story of his father (a dissident who fell foul of Gadaffi) into that of Libya - to which Hisham was able to return only after Gaddafi’s fall. The book is a testament to the way in which tumultuous world events can bear down on an individual family. It was described by Barack Obama as ‘A beautifully written memoir’.

Hisham Matar (born 1970) is a British-American writer who was born in the New York City and now lives in London. In addition to his fiction and non-fiction books, he has writen essays in the Independent, the Times, and the New York Times. Hisham Matar obtained a degree in architecture, and an MA in Design Futures at Goldsmith’s, University of London.
