John Bew’s biography of Clement Attlee is unashamedly admiring. He sees Attlee not as an unassuming person of modest talents in the shadow of Churchill, but as a great prime minister whose achievements transformed post-war Britain. These achievement included the creation of the National Health Service, the granting of independence to India, and ensuring Britain’s role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Reviewing the book in the Sunday Times, Robert Harris wrote: ‘Outstanding … We still live in the society that was shaped by Clement Attlee’.
