MURDER IN THE GULAG: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ALEXEI NAVALNY (2024)
Alexei Navalny (born 1976) was an Russian opposition leader who died in prison in mysterious circumstances in 2024. He was an anti-corruption campaigner and longstanding critic of Putin’s regime. Following trials which are widely regarded as politically motivated he was convicted of embezzlement in 2013 and 2014. He stood in the election for Moscow mayor, getting 27% of the vote. He was barred from running for president in 2018.
In 2020 Navalny was evacuated to Berlin following a poising with the nerve agent Novichok. Following another trial for embezzlement, Navalny was committed to prison in 2023.
The Daily Telegraph wrote of the book: 'Murder in the Gulag is brilliant journalistic writing: punchy, eloquent, page-turning and factual. It's a powerful reminder of what an extraordinary man Navalny was’.
