Jimmy Carter (born 1924) served as the 39th President of the USA. He was previously Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. Born in Plains, Georgia, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and joined the Navy submarine service. After military service he took over and revived his family’s peanut farming business. He supported the civil rights movement, and became active in the Democratic Party. He served on;ly one term as President, losing by a landslide to Ronald Reagan. After his presidency Carter travelled the world acting as a mediator in internatonal conflicts. For this work he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

The New York Times Book Review wrote of Bird’s biography of Carter: "Important . . . [a] landmark presidential biography . . . Bird is able to build a persuasive case that the Carter presidency deserves this new look."

Kai Bird (born 1951) is an American columnist and author who won the Pulitzer Prize for his biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer. He obtained his BA in History from Carleton College and a M.S. in journalism from Northwestern University. In 2017 he became executive director Levy Center for Biography at the City University of New York.
