Nigel Farage (born 1964), the son of a stockbroker, did not go to university but went straight into work after school as a commodities broker. In 1993 Farage became a founding member of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) which campaigned for the UK to leave the European Union. He was elected to the European Parliament in 1999, being re-elected in 2004, 2009 and 2014. He played a leading part in the successful Leave campaign during the lead up to the 2016 referendum on UK membership of the European Union. In a 2016 speech to the European Parliament he grossly insulted the EU and its parliament, as he had done for many years. He ended his speech: ‘When I cam here 17 years ago I said tht I wanted to lead a campaign to get Britain to leave the European Union, you laughed at me. Well I have to say, you’re not laughing now, are you? In 2018 he left UKIP, accusing it of swinging to the far right. He joined the Brexit Party, which which in 2019 won 29 seats in the European Parliament. In 2020 the Brexit Party was re-branded as the Reform Party, with Farage becoming its president. Reviewing the book in the Times, David Aaronovitche described it as ‘A superb piece of thorough journalism’.
