Michael Frayn describes the turbulent life of his father - an intelligent boy who overcame a poor and struggling childhood. He made a go of his life, but had his happiness snatched away. Michael Frayn (born 1933) is a distinguished English playwright whose fifteen plays include the comedy Noises Off, Copenhagen and Afterlife. His father was an asbestos salesman whose working class family included locksmiths and blacksmiths. After the slump in asbestos prices, Frayn’s mother and sister supported the family by working as shop assistants. Michael Frayn learned Russian during his National Service, then obtained a philosophy degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He worked for the Guardian and Observer as a reporter and columnist, before embarking on his writing career.
