THE LIGHT OF BATTLE: EISENHOWER, D-DAY, AND THE BIRTH OF THE AMERICAN SUPERPOWER (2024)
Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower was born in 1890. His father David earned a modest living as a railroad mechanic and at a creamery. Without the means to pursue college education, Dwight Eisenhower joined the West Point military academy in 1911. He served in logistics and then in the infantry, and was promoted to train tank crews during the First World War. He had hoped to serve in command of tanks in France, but the war ended before this could be achieved. He rose through the army between the wars, to become Supreme Allied Commander during the Second World War. After the war he was elected as Republican president of the USA, serving from 1953 to 1961. Michel Paradis’ biography of Eisenhower focuses on his command of US forces during the Second World War, and particularly the planning and execution the D.Day landings.
The Wall Street Journal wrote of the book: "An extremely rich tableau. ... The Light of Battle brings out the all-important troika of main decision makers: Eisenhower, Marshall, Churchill. ... The D-Day operation of 80 years ago was one of the greatest undertakings of the 20th century, and Eisenhower’s mediating role in its success was truly remarkable. The Light of Battle strives to show us how and why Ike managed things so well, and in this the volume succeeds."
