Ian Fleming (born 1908) was a British author who had a career in Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War, who went on to the a journalist and author. He became famous as the author of the James Bond series of spy novels which were made into hugely successful films over a period of more than twenty years. The James Bond series of books were one of the best selling fiction books of all time, selling over 100 million copies worldwide. A member of the wealthy Fleming banking family, Fleming was educated at Eton, where he was an outstanding athlete. He attempted, but failed, to join the Foreign Office, and, through family connections, became a journalist at the Reuters news agency. In 1939 he moved to Naval Intelligence, working there throughout the Second World War. After the war he joined the Memsley newspaper group as foreign manager, and began his career as a writer.

The Financial Times wrote of Shakespeare’s biography of Fleming: ‘A definitive biography that deepens and reshapes previous versions of Fleming’s life… light-footed and swift-moving despite its copious research… Shakespeare’s Fleming rises from these richly textured pages as a more substantial and sympathetic figure than the preening snob of myth.’ The Australian described the book as: ‘A masterpiece... His book is better than almost any non-fiction ever gets, a work of literature in its own right’.
