Vladimir Putin (born 1952) began his political career in St.Petersburg, moving to Moscow in 1996 under President Boris Yeltsin. He became Prime Minister in 1999 and President after Yeltsin’s resignation.

Philip Short (born 1945) is a journalist and author who for 25 years worked for the BBC as a foreign correspondent. He was educated at Queens’ College, Cambridge. After graduation he worked as a freelance journalist in Malawi and Uganda. He has written biographies of Hastings Banda, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, Francois Mittserrand as well as Vladimir Putin.
