Richard Rhodes describes the life of Robert Oppenheimer through his leading role in the development of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was a leading American physicist who had graduated from Harvard University in 1925 and was director of the Mahattan Project at the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Second World War. In 1947 he became direcor of the Institute for Advanced study at Princeton University, from where he led an unsuccessful campaign against the development of the hydrogen bomb.

Richard Rhodes (born 1937) is an American journalist and author who has written 23 books. He specialises in the history of the development of the atomic and hydrogen bombs, on which he has written four volumes. The last, ‘The Twilight of the Bombs’ was published in 2010. His other writing includes a Biography of James Audubon, known for his life size drawings of the birds of America. Rhodes has also written four novels. Rhodes overcame an extremely difficult childhood. His mother committed suicide when he and his brother were young children. Their father re-married, but their step mother mistreated the boys, who escaped to a new life in an orphanage. Richard won a scholarship to Yale University, and embarked on his writing career.
