Robert Cecil, with his network of spies, played a key role in protecting England from the internal and external threats of the Gunpowder Plot and the Spanish Armada. He was a key adviser to the monarch in the rule of Elizabeth I, and her successor James I & VI. He skillfully steered both of these hard-to-manage monarchs.
