Toussaint Louverture (born 1743) was a Haitian general and played the leading part in the Haitian Revolution which took place between 1791 and 1804. It resulted in the declaration of the world’s first blck state. His first military action was in alliance with Spain against the Saint-Dominique Royalists. This led to him becoming Governor General for Life of Saint-Dominique. He lastly fought against Napoleon Bonaparte’s republican troops. A devout Catholic, he had been born a slave in Saint-Dominique.

The Guardian wrote of the book: ‘A gripping biography of the leader of the slave revolt that led to Haiti’s independence, described as ‘the first black superhero of the modern age’.’ The Times Literary Supplement wrote: ‘This is a balanced, yet sympathetic, biography which throws light on Toussaint’s personality and acknowledges the importance of his political ideals.’

Sudhir Hazareesingh (born 1961) is a British-Mauritian historian. He has since 1990 been a fellow and Tutor in Politics at Balliol College, Oxford. His work focuses on modern political history from 1850, with particular emphasis on the history of France from Napoleon to Charles de Gaulle. He is the son of Mauritian historian Kissoonsing Hazareesingh.
